Phnom Chisor is a historical site located in Dokpor village, approximately 62km from Phnom Penh. It was built in the early 11th century by King Suryavarman and sits on top of a hill requiring visitors to climb 412 steps to the summit. A basic level of fitness is required to undertake this tour.
The views alone make the climb worth the journey as it affords visitors a panoramic view of Takeo Province with rice paddies stretching for kilometers. It is framed on 3 sides by buildings of a modern pagoda. Inside the main temple there are Buddhist statues worshipped by the monks and lay pilgrims. An enclosure, partially ruined surrounds the ancient complex. In 1973 the area of Phnom Chisor was devastated by an US bomb attack and rebuilt in 1979.
After hotel pickup, enjoy a 2 hour drive through the rice fields and villages. A local snack will be offered to taste one of the specialties of Cambodia. About half way through your journey you will stop and visit Ta Prohm Temple. This temple is older than Angkor Wat and is a magnificent example of Cambodian architecture. For lunch you will dine alongside Lake Tonle Bati which is a popular traditional holiday spot for people from Phnom Penh.
Then we will continue onto Phnom Chisor to visit the temple and enjoy the fabulous views. With over 412 steps to climb a basic level of fitness is required to undertake this tour. Your tour guide will explain the daily lives of the monks who call this holy place home.
You will see beautiful sculptures, wall art and a number of modern pagodas. In addition there is the ancient Khmer temple. The temple was built in the 11th century by the Khmer Empire King Suryayaraman and it as dedicated to the Hindu divinities Shiva and Vishnu. The original name of the temple was Sri Suryaparvata.
To close this Journey, you will enjoy taking part in a blessing ceremony by a local holly-man which will be interpreted by your tour guide.
