Join us on this four day trip through Virachey National Park. You will be sleeping in a Hammock in the Jungle (and maybe woken up by Gibbons), building a Bamboo Raft for a trip on the Olalai River, visiting local Indigenous Groups, Swimming under Waterfalls, keeping an eye out for interesting Wildlife and Plants, and learning about the varied Geography of the Evergreen Forest, Jungle, and Savanna.
Located near the border with Laos, Virachey National Park is one of the least visited areas of the country. Its rolling Mountains, Savannas, Jungles and Evergreen Forest make it a unique habitat.
Day 1:
Departure from Banlung at 08:30 for the drive to the small market of Veun Sai, where we will cross the river by ferry then drive a bit further to the Indigenous village of Rouk. From there we start our trek. The terrain here is hills with Jungle and Smallholdings, continuing on to Bamboo Forest, then up a small mountain to our campsite for the night. This is a sheltered spot next to a creek where you can swim while your guide prepares dinner on a campfire.
Day 2:
Unless the Gibbons wake you up first, get up at about 07:00 for breakfast again prepared by your guide. As you are eating they will pack away the camp and get ready for the day. Keeping an eye out for things like Monkeys and Hornbills we trek for about three hours, then stop for lunch at a small stream where you can cool down. After lunch we have a couple of hours to go to reach our campsite for the night next to a waterfall. The shorter trek today is because after dinner we are going on a night trek. There is never a guarantee, but we hope to see some of our Nocturnal friends including Jungle Cats, Slow Loris, and various Birds.
Day 3:
After breakfast we have about a two hour trek to the banks of the Olalai River where we will be building our Bamboo Raft. With happy bellies from lunch we set off down the River, gliding along for about four hours until we get to a small Indigenous settlement where we stop for the night. We will setup camp then have dinner with one of the families.
Day 4:
You will want to be up early today to see the sunrise over the grasslands and potentially view Raptors finding their breakfast. After your own breakfast back at camp we go again through the forest to the Kavet Village. With a stop there to get a glimpse of their daily lives and have lunch. Then we trek back to the river and take the ferry across to return to Banlung in the late afternoon.
